IUCN SSC Chameleon Specialist Group

Compared with at least 21.1% of the worlds reptiles being threatened with extinction (Cox et al. 2022 - Nature), chameleons face a disproportionate level of threat, with at least 34% being threatened based on current IUCN Red List Assessments. The mission of the Chameleon Specialist Group is to improve the conservation status and sustainable use of wild chameleons. We do this, in part, by providing an evidence-based approach and scientific knowledge directed at the implementation of conservation actions and public policies that lead to the reduction of the extinction risk for members of this enigmatic lizard family.
